Default RandyA's Official 86 Saleen #120 build thread!

    Hey guys,

I've wanted to do one of these for a while and finally I get the chance! As most of you know, I purchased Kyles old 86 Saleen which is going to get put back together this spring for a little fun! I brought it home a few weeks ago and started cleaning it up for the rebuild:

    starting point:

Not too bad but in desperate need of a wet sand/buff to see if the paint is salvageable. It had a car cover over it for part of its life which scratched it up pretty bad.

I started scrubbing down the interior but it looks like I'm going to need carpet and upholstery at some point:

the mats cleaned up nicely! :-)

Here's the ugly part! The engine bay needs a complete going through. I broke out the pressure washer and got a head start:

Lastly, the front bumper cover needs to be replaced (it was hacked up pretty bad to install the aero air dam) and the correct 86 air dam needs to be installed:

Here's the plans. Kyle has already done the lion's share of the full 87 Saleen brake conversion complete with full SVO 5 lug disk brakes all the way around and the proper offset 87 era Saleen wheels:

I need to finish the brake lines in the rear then she will have some stopping power. It has a Flowmaster cat back system on it and will have some headers but I need to round up an H (or X) pipe to complete the exhaust upgrade unless I want to install the stock H pipe (nah). It already has a mass air conversion so I figure a free flowing intake along with the current 3:55 gears and Saleen suspension should make it fun to drive! It needs a little cosmetic work but otherwise it's going to be a blast!

Looks good. Sorry if I missed this, but do you have the engine for it as well, or had you already pulled it in the pic?

I do have it. Stocker 86 sitting on the stand! I'll take some more pics when I get things together

Well, I managed to get 120's engine dug out, on the engine stand, and somewhat mocked up to see what I still need to gather to get the heart pulsing again! If no one saw previously, this is how I got it!:

    truckload of these!

sorted things out and came up with this:

I started wire brushing and paint stripping so I can actually see what color metal is on the engine block! LOL. I did manage to put together a list of all the items I need though:

    - bolts: intake, timing cover, valve covers, flywheel, water pump, dizzy, bell housing, etc.
    - thermostat housing
    - cap and rotor
    - air box
    - MAF meter (yes it's been converted to mass air)
the list goes on and on! I need to head back over to Kyle's house and dig through his never ending collection of fox parts!

Once I get a complete assessment of what's needed, the engine will come apart to freshened up. Whew, I have my work cut out for me but it looks like fun!
